Name components after what they do

3 min read

Every design system I have joined had a folder of components named after their shape: Card, Card 2, Card Large, Card New. Nobody could find anything, so people built a sixth card.

Naming a component after its job makes it findable and stops it drifting. A PayeeRow can only ever be a payee row. A Card can become anything, and usually does.

A test

If you can’t name it without describing how it looks, it might not be one component yet. Ship it inside the screen that needs it and extract it when a second screen asks.
